The 1904 Olympic Games were part of the World's Fair held in St. Louis, Missouri. The founder of the modern Olympic Games and President of the Olympic Games Committee, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, objected to the Olympics being held as part of the World's Fair, "as the latter were counter attractions which drew off attention from the importance of the international games." (NYT: June 23, 1904).
Sitting in the front row, second from the left, is John Jesus Flanagan, and third from the left is Martin Joseph Sheridan. In 1904, Flanagan came in fourth in the Discus Throw, won silver in the 56lb Weight Throw, and gold in the Hammer Throw. Sheridan came in fourth in the Shot Put and won gold in the Discus Throw.
